The best yo-yo to use in any competition or performance is one you are comfortable with, and also one that you have with you at the time. I love the Freehand Zero with a recessed-sticker mod, but you have to figure out what playing style you have. Some players want to throw once and have to yo-yo spin forever, others want to do a lot of throws or regenerations, but the most important thing is that you are comfortable and familiar with the yo-yo. It is very hard to borrow one from a friend and do well under pressure.

Hey mark what would be a good yo yo to use in a compitision.

Steve Brown is astonishingly good at almost everything, but especially yo-yos and tops. He worked at Duncan for a long time, and moved on to other things. He is still a big part of the yo-yo community, and was spotted wreaking havoc in Orlando at the World Yo-yo Contest.

I started yo-yoing when I got a yo-yo in my stocking for Chrsitmas in High School. I loved it right away, and started performing a juggling show with some friends. Years later Steve Brown started up the Duncan Crew, and once I had reached a certain level of awesomeness he invited me to join. I cover more of the performance side of the crew, and others cover the competition side.

Andy: I was joking. Of course I know that people live in Canada, and that there are a lot of yo-yo players up there. I don't actually know why there is no Canada Crew.

Delton: Pay depends on a lot of factors that are too involved to get into in a public forum, sorry. Which new yo-yos are you referring to?

Yes, the Freehand Zero is a great sleeper, especially if you clean the bearing. You won't get the kind of spins that you would off of a metal yo-yo of course, but it is great for a plastic yo-yo.

The Breakaway is really just the throw for a Trapeze. You can get the yo-yo spinning with a different throw, and then swing it onto the string. Without seeing what you are doing I can't really say whether it's correct.

do u have to do a break away to do a trapeze. like i can do the trapeze without the breakaway but my friends say its not it but i get it on the string .

The Takeshi mod may give it a little more spin time, but the best thing you can do is clean your bearing. You can learn more here: http://www.howtoyoyo.com/pages/yo-yo-maintenance

You asked how I got discovered. It didn't really happen that way. There was no magic moment. I met a bunch of yo-yo players in 1992 at the first World Yo-yo Contest that had been held in decades. They hassled me until I agreed to compete. I came in last. But it was the motivation to practice hard and come back 3 years later to win in the one-hand division. It was a long slow road, but eventually I was a god enough player, and more importantly in my case, a good enough performer, to be asked to be on the team.

The Takeshi mod is also known as the recessed sticker mod. It is a modification where the gap is made wider below the friction sticker so that the yo-yo becomes unresponsive. It makes it possible to do more advanced tricks without any fear that the yo-yo will come back when you don't expect it, and smash you in the knuckles. In order to use it you have to be able to bind to get the yo-yo to come back up. Aside from the way they look, all unmodified Freehand Zeros are the same. Just pick one that you like.

I guess the main thing that is nice about being well known in the yo-yo world is that I can find friends almost anywhere I go. Duncan is very good to The Crew when it comes to yo-yos. They hook us up nicely. I am a juggler and yo-yo guy for a living, so yes, I do a lot of performing work. It's a great way to to make a living.
